Yu-Gi-Oh R is the series before the Yu-Gi-Oh in America. This existed before that first battle with Kiaba, and when Yugi made the Millenium Puzzle. You have seen some flashbacks on Yu-Gi-Oh that we never saw. For some reason, it isn't translated in America and it will not ever be dubbed in English.
Yu-Gi-Oh R has a lot of episodes that i have seen that aren't related to duel Monsters Cards for Quite a while.
